RICHARD MALOY
Raw Attempts

12 December - 27 February

In Raw Attempts Auckland based artist Richard Maloy treats ARTSPACE as both a gallery and a studio space. For a period of 85 days, from the first day of installation through to the last day of the exhibition, Maloy is developing large scale sculptural forms daily within the gallery. In doing so he responds to a set of self-imposed restrictions which in turn respond to the materials and physical site. Working unseen at night and in gallery downtime, the resulting changes become apparent to regular visitors over time, conjuring up glimpses of the process of making. More

NEW ARTISTS SHOW 2009, FRESH GALLERY OTARA, NEWCALL, NONE
5 September - 10 October

ARTSPACE’s annual new artist show is a highlight of the Auckland exhibition calendar. The new artist show acts as a showcase, and barometer, of emerging national talent. This year’s version sees ARTSPACE evolving the selection process by actively working with three very different artist-led initiatives.

ARTSPACE has invited Newcall, a central Auckland based gallery and studio program run by a collective of recent Elam graduates, Fresh Gallery Otara, a Manukau City Council initiative for contemporary Pacific art, and Dunedin’s long-running but difficult to define performance space, None.

Cao Fei Utopia
11 July - 22 August

Contemporary discussion on China is saturated with superlatives that attempt to reflect the dramatic shifts that have taken place within the lifetime of artist Cao Fei, (born in 1978) from collective idealism to a more individualistic consumption-centred society. As a native of Guangzhou, one of the first cities to feel the effects of globalisation, Cao Fei continues to occupy a unique position with regard to generation and geography.

Jeena Shin, ARTSPACE Stairwell Project (1973-) 2009-2011

Unfolding over the next three years at ARTSPACE is an ambitious project by Jeena Shin that will see the stairwell transformed in subtle and not so subtle ways. Commissioned by ARTSPACE Director Emma Bugden for the duration of her directorship, this long-term engagement is an in-depth response to site that includes an acknowledgement of the space’s architectural history, which dates back to the 1970’s, and the building’s origins as the Newton Post Office. As such the project is both revelatory; seeking as it does to lay bare some of the original architectural attributes, and accumulative as Shin will be working over a sustained period of time building up her trademark geometric planes in fresh, site-specific configurations.

The 2008 ARTSPACE programme opens with You Are Here, Ariane Craig-Smith’s graduation exhibition. This is the culmination of her 2007 Curatorial Internship at ARTSPACE.

For this exhibition Craig-Smith invited five artists to explore personal strategies of mapping and says “I was responding to ideas within the work of these artists that excited me. Each speaks through individual concerns of concepts that I feel are universal. I’m interested in how we negotiate our way through the world and form personal relationships to the spaces we pass through or inhabit. Working with the artists has been fantastic, seeing new work unfold and existing projects evolve.”

Kah Bee Chow, Fiona Connor, Finn Ferrier, Alex Monteith and John Ward Knox present new and existing works which extend the idea of the map and its propositions beyond the page, to consider the tactical nature of experiencing space, place and motion. Through consideration of an architectural detail, or by propelling the body into and through the landscape, through a plotting of journeys or suggestion of a new viewpoint, these works push and pull at our familiar relationships to location.

The gallery itself forms an integral material within the exhibition. Visitors will have a new encounter with ARTSPACE, experiencing a shift in perspective that both locates and transports them as viewers.
